Pete
started tattooing in 1984 at Granville at
Duke Brown's, a real old school tattooist
and tradionalist where it was all informal
learning. Pete started by mopping floors,
cleaning the shop and work area, soldering
needles, colouring in design sheets (as there
were no coloured design sheets back then
only black and whites).
Learning in this way Pete got to watch and
learn, asking questions and picking up tips
and techniques and also Duke would show him
how to do specific techniques when time would
allow.
After a year Pete continued his tattooing
education with Greg Ardron in Sleevemasters
around 1985-1986. Pete used to work a full
work shift and go to the tattoo studio's
after that as unpaid labour as this was the
only way to get a start back then, but he
was very happy to do it as tattooing was
his passion.
He also worked in Carlton, St Mary's, Kiwi
Kim's in Newtown and Bob Hammond's in Kings
Cross where he stayed for 7 years under Bob
and then bought it and ran it himself for
a further 6 years until the building was
demolished. Now for the last few years he's
been here at Bill's Custom Tattoo's.
